Sometimes, you just want to give the party a magic item. Sometimes this is even in prep, where I'm just like, "oh, and there's a random magic item here." Often I don't even want anything specific, and the more generic it is, the better. I just want to give them what some people call a book item, a magic item right out of the book of the game we're running. Usually this is something that the players all will recognize, because of its iconic status and fifty year history with the game. And maybe it'll even be something they don't have any good use for right now, but now they have it! The problem is: the treasure tables in all these fucking books are indecipherable. They often account for hoards of coins and weird jewelry, or have you roll for multiple percentage chance that an item is there, or determine it based on what monster lives here, or you need to roll through one of a dozen rarity tables or at least figure out what type of item you want to hand them.

I don't need all that shit! Just give me a list of 100 good items I can roll on!

So: I took the magic item lists from the 5e SRD, Old School Essentials Classic and Advanced Fanstasy, and Delving Deeper. Then I spent some time conforming them to the same nomenclature (because "carpet of flying" and "flying carpet" are the same item but named differently). Then I put it in Google Sheets and identified all items that appeared in at least 2 of the lists.

That gave me about 86 items. Then I manually went through the lists and went "oh this one needs to be in it, oh this one needs to be in it." That got me to 111. I cut it down by removing some and also merging a few (boots and cloak of elvenkind don't need separate entries, you're an adult who can decide what to give them).

I also redistributed it and formatted it so that every 5 entries is a more "common" item so there's a hidden 1d20 list that's perfectly usable.

This list is free and public domain. You may freely republish or modify it for any use. I've included a plain text file of the entire list that you can use to create your own table if you so wish. The PDF is formatted to fit on half an 8.5" x 11" page (digest sized). The items should be available in almost every variation of the game ever published.

Enjoy responsibly. Stay gold.
